FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONVIRON AWARDED $3.6 MILLION CONTRACT TO SUPPLY GROWTH ROOMS
TO PLANT RESEARCH FACILITY AT CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY
Winnipeg - February 8, 2005 ----Conviron, a world leader in the design and manufacture of controlled
environment systems, has been awarded a contract to supply 16 plant growth rooms and control systems to
a new plant research facility for the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Cambridge, UK, to be
constructed adjacent to the University Botanic Garden.
The University's Botanic Garden is a popular attraction for visitors and also serves as a study and research
resource for the University's Zoology, Geography, Architecture, Genetics and Plant Sciences departments.
The new facility, now under construction, will house the state-of-the-art equipment used for growing plants
under precisely controlled environmental conditions. Conviron will be responsible for the design,
manufacture and installation of the sophisticated rooms. Ultimately, it is planned for a second building to be
erected at the site that will house the University's collection of more than 1.1 million herbarium specimens,
which include those gathered by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle.
Steve Kroft, president of Conviron, said his company is extremely pleased to have been awarded the
contract to supply its growth room products for such a prestigious institution as Cambridge University. "The
new research building at Cambridge will be a world-class plant research centre and Conviron is delighted to
have been selected to work with the Department of Plant Sciences. The award of this project to Conviron
further demonstrates the confidence that the world's scientific community has in Conviron and our solutions,
especially when it comes to the development of large scale, custom-engineered, research facilities."
Howard Griffiths, Professor of Plant Ecology at the University, said "The Department of Plant Sciences at the
University of Cambridge is extremely pleased to be developing a new building containing growth facilities
which will equip us for twenty-first century plant science. The environment in which we grow plants needs to
be controlled very precisely in terms of temperature, length of day and intensity of light. This new facility will
give us the means to do this and will impact on our research at all levels. Our work encompasses the
molecular basis to development, cell biology, photosynthesis and metabolism, from signaling within cells to
complex organs like roots and leaves, as regulated by growth conditions or pathogens. In addition, we are
interested in understanding how the physiology of plants reflects their ecological distribution and agricultural
performance in the face of climate change, or by modeling their interactions with pathogens."
"In order to deliver the appropriate growth facilities for such a range of applications, we are pleased to be
working with Conviron, who have a worldwide reputation for the quality of their provision and excellent
technical backup," Griffiths said.
Design and installation of the new growth rooms and control system is to be completed August, 2005.
