FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
University of Sheffield
to Receive State-of-the Art Environmental Plant Growth Chambers
Winnipeg based Controlled Environments Limited (Conviron) working
with its U.K. partner Scientific Laboratory Supplies (SLS), has
been selected by the University of Sheffield in England to design,
supply, install, and test new sophisticated plant growth chambers
and rooms for University's Department of Animal and Plant Sciences.
The new facility equipment is valued at approximately £1.5 million
pounds ($3.4 million Cdn.), and will house some of the most diverse
controlled environments in the country. According to Darren Rose,
Chief Technician at the University of Sheffield, "The flexibility
of the Conviron equipment will foster new research opportunities
in the monitoring and controlling of environmental conditions, enabling
us to effectively simulate a large portion of the world's climatic
regions.
The decision to have Conviron design and supply the equipment was
based not only on technical merit and the ability to meet the needs
and schedule of the University, but also on the credibility of the
parties involved. "The awarding of the contract was also based on
business relationships spanning some 20 years. It's all about people,"
said Ian Beckett, a Director at SLS. "Our employees work closely
with the University staff selling scientific research equipmentwe
have to make sure it meets their needs."
Funding for this project was by the Joint Infrastructure Fund
(JIF). These funds are awarded to educational institutions that
demonstrate scientific merit and a need to upgrade their infrastructure.
The 32 plant growth chambers and rooms will be housed in the fully
renovated Central Boiler House, which became vacant when the University
converted to a district heating system.
Conviron consults with scientists and researchers from around the
world, delivering innovative solutions for controlled environments
to the agricultural and life science markets.
