Mizzou opens research facility featuring extended height growth rooms

On November 15, 2019 the University of Missouri cut the ribbon on its new plant growth research facility. The event was attended by UM Chancellor Alexander Cartwright, UM System President Mun Choi, Columbia Mayor Brian Treece, Bob Sharp, the director of UM's Interdisciplinary Plant Group as well as prominent faculty and community members.
The East Campus Plant Growth Facility now boasts more than 41,000 ft² (3,800 m²) of research space - including 9,385 ft² (870 m²) of dedicated controlled environment space. The facility features some of the tallest plant growth chambers in the world that will allow corn to grow to its full 12 ft. (3.6 m) height . From droughts to monsoons, the chambers enable researchers to simulate environmental conditions from all over the world to study their impacts on crops.
“This facility is an incredible example of UM’s collaborative approach to groundbreaking research,” Choi said. “With cutting-edge tools and spaces at their disposal, researchers from several divisions on campus will work together to address global challenges and benefit Missouri’s agricultural economy. Here is yet another demonstration of the UM System’s commitment to making a positive impact on society through research.
